Dubai Launches New Dh1.4 Billion Drainage Project to Tackle Flooding
Dubai Municipality has awarded contracts worth Dh1.439 billion as part of the ‘Tasreef’ initiative, marking a major milestone in the city’s efforts to enhance its stormwater drainage network. The project is a proactive step to reduce flooding risks and improve the efficiency of existing drainage systems across key areas of the emirate.
This move aligns with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who continues to push for future-ready, strategic infrastructure developments that solidify Dubai’s reputation as a global leader in urban planning and sustainability.
What Is the Tasreef Project?
Tasreef is Dubai’s largest unified stormwater collection system and one of the most operationally efficient in the region. The newly announced contracts under this initiative will support the construction of over 36 kilometers of new drainage lines. These lines will link into the main Tasreef tunnel, creating a connected drainage system across the emirate.
The scope of the project covers several critical areas including Nad Al Hamar, the vicinity of Dubai International Airport, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Badaa. The upgrade is expected to significantly boost drainage capacity, lower operational and maintenance costs, and enhance service levels for both residents and businesses.
Long-Term Resilience and Scalability
According to His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, this development marks a pivotal point in Tasreef’s implementation. The project aims to increase the system’s discharge capacity by a remarkable 700% over the next 100 years.
“This is a pioneering, strategic, and transformative project,” said bin Ghalita. “It is implemented by Dubai Municipality as part of our efforts to develop advanced and sustainable infrastructure in line with the highest standards of urban and spatial planning.”
He emphasized that Tasreef reflects the municipality’s strategic goals for integrated stormwater and surface water management. It also supports the broader vision of transforming Dubai into a more sustainable, attractive, and livable city.
A Dh30 Billion Vision for the Future
The Tasreef initiative carries a total estimated investment of Dh30 billion, making it the largest project of its kind in Dubai. It is designed to be scalable for the next 100 years and aims to reduce the cost of constructing, operating, and maintaining stormwater stations by 20%. Additionally, it is expected to significantly extend the lifespan of Dubai’s stormwater infrastructure.
This ambitious infrastructure development ensures Dubai remains ahead of the curve in climate resilience and urban readiness, reinforcing its status as one of the world’s most advanced cities.
